EARTH. When you hear or think of the word earth, first thoughts probably are dirt or soil. Earth is defined as the planet on which we live; the world and the substance of the land surface; soil.
WATER. In contrast, what actually makes up the greater part of the earth is not soil but water. About 71 percent of the Earth's surface is water-covered with the oceans holding about 96.5 percent of all Earth's water. Ever wondered What would Earth be like without water? In one word...desolate. Water is on and in the earth so let's celebrate!
June 8 is...World Oceans Day
World Oceans Day is an annual event to celebrate and honor the bodies of water without which nothing could survive. The oceans generate most of the oxygen we breathe, they regulate our climate, and they are an abundant source for our food supply. Thoughts of succulent seafood dishes indeed make the mouth water! Yet, if we are not careful about protecting our environment and the oceans, such may become only a memory.
The oceans are in trouble. We are at a crossroads in history, and the actions we take – or fail to take – in the next decade will decisively impact the future of our seas and of our planet. The oceans are vast and deep. So much is yet to be discovered and explored for we still know so little about them. In fact, less than 10% has been explored, and scientists believe over 9 million species are yet to be discovered in the deep blue depths! WOW!

Who knows what will be discovered in our lifetime!
Whether you go for a dip, surf, scuba-dive or dive into a bucket of seafood, join in with hundreds of thousands, thousands of thousands, in over 45 countries in celebration of World Oceans Day. Most importantly, we must inspire younger generations to get involved with the conservation of our oceans.
Globally, our oceans are in deep trouble. Overfishing, pollution, bycatch and global warming are endangering the lives of marine creatures and habitat. We're also endangering our lives if we don't protect the oceans. We rely on the oceans for food, our livelihood and survival!
What a wonderful world under the ocean!
