Today in Music History: April 6, 1998, American country singer Tammy Wynette died at the age of 55. During the late 60s and early 70s, she scored 17
hit singles including "Stand By Your Man", and sold over 30 million
records world-wide, married five times and once filed for bankruptcy. The "First Lady of Country Music" had the 1991 hit with
The KLF "Justified and Ancient" which became a No. 1 hit in eighteen
countries.
"Apartment #9," Wynette's first single, was released late in 1966 and almost broke the country Top 40 early in 1967.
Many of Wynette's hits dealt with classic themes of loneliness, D.I.V.O.R.C.E., and the difficulties of man-woman relationships.
Tammy once said: "I spent 15 minutes writing ["Stand by Your Man"],
and a lifetime defending it."
