Br-r-r-r-r! It is freezing outside in most parts of our nation, yet, the celebration focuses on ice cream. How bizarre! Not just any ice cream but strawberry ice cream. Oh, those delicious strawberries! Thanks to California's rich sandy soil and temperate climate, as well as staggered planting schedules, strawberry deliciousness is available 12 months of the year.Ice cream did not begin with its creamy goodness as we know it today. It actually evolved from ancient flavored ices often generated from snow. Sweet juices were mixed with the snow and ice as early as 3000 BC. Fruity ice creams are still very popular today as proven with today's celebration of strawberry ice cream. However, vanilla and chocolate still reign supreme at the top of the list.

Strawberry ice cream has a long and impressive pedigree in the United States. Dolley Madison, wife of our fourth president James Madison, was a charming and innovative hostess. According to tradition, Dolley heard of a freed slave named Sallie Shadd who had gone into the catering business in Wilmington, Delaware, and achieved fame for a marvelous new dessert sensation combining frozen cream, sugar and fruit. Dolley went to Delaware to sample the new dessert and ordered a “magnificent pink dome” of strawberry ice cream to be served at President Madison’s second inaugural ball in 1813. After that, affairs at Dolley’s White House were renowned for the strawberry “bombe glacee” centerpieces.
