Welcome to Awakenings

Life IS history in the making. Every word we say, everything we do becomes history the moment it is said or done. Life void of memories leaves nothing but emptiness. For those who might consider history boring, think again: It is who we are, what we do and why we are here. We are certainly individuals in our thoughts and deeds but we all germinated from seeds planted long, long ago.

Word of the Day: Daiquiri

When you hear the word daiquiri, the first thought is probably the cocktail. In fact, July 19 is...

National Daiquiri Day

...the day to celebrate the cocktail. The daiquiri is rum-based invented by an American mining engineer named Jennings Cox. One legend has it that Cox created the first daiquiri in 1898 in the village of Daiquiri, Cuba (about 4 miles east of Santiago de Cuba) after he ran out of gin while entertaining American guests at a small bar.

Hemingway Daiquiri Recipe
According to another legend, Ernest Hemingway inspired the creation of the frozen variety at El Floridita in Havana, Cuba in the 1940s where he was served his preferred drink, El Papa Doble, one right after another by the bartender Constantino Robalaigua. Hemingway is legendary for his appreciation of a good drink, or two or many, being quite picky about what he was drinking.

I drink to make other people more interesting.” –Ernest Hemingway

Hemingway said these drinks “had no taste of alcohol and felt, as you drank them, the way downhill glacier skiing feels running through powder snow.”

The beautiful simplicity of the original daiquiri is often referred to as the 'lime slurpee' since it is lime oriented. Today, there are dozens of daiquiri flavors and varieties with the most famous being the Strawberry Daiquiri.

Of course, you may not be a cocktail connoisseur so who said the Daiquiri is limited only to the cocktail? Since July is National Ice Cream Month, why not indulge in Daiquiri Ice Ice Cream or Strawberry Daiquiri Sorbet? If you prefer to forgo the alcohol, use rum-flavored extract. You might even want to go the route of Strawberry Daiquiri Cupcakes.
