A Phenomenon in Flight
How would you like to awaken to this scene?
The osprey is sometimes known as the sea hawk, fish eagle or fish hawk. It is a large raptor (aka bird of prey), reaching more than 60 cm (24 in) in length and 180 cm (71 in) across the wings.
We used to see Ospreys a lot down at the Vineyard, but then they left and the American Eagles came ... and they stayed until the cormorants chased them away. We have eagles in our woods ... They are amazing birds, glorious in flight. American eagles are fish eagles too, so they only live near water. We see them often, but rarely close up. They fly very high and circle, watching ... but I have come to recognize thier shape against the sky.
Wow--what precision--what perfect eyesight!! I don't hink I've seen an osprey in real life as I would remember those white markings.I do see a lot od hawks and eagles and love to watch them glide and soar on the wind. We have sea gulls where I live and smaller versions called terns which fly all across the Island. This was lovely.
