September 8 is...
National Date Nut Bread Day
Two dates of celebration are found on the Internet for National Date Nut Bread Day. One occurs on December 22 right in the midst of Christmas celebration. The other, of course, is being celebrated on this day, September 8. Fall is already in the air so time is 'ripe' for baking a good old-fashioned bread.
A Bit of History...
A Bit of History...
A key ingredient in the date nut bread is none other than dates. The Spaniards introduced dates into Mexico and California in 1765. But, the origin of dates goes much farther back in history. Dates have been a staple food of the Middle East and the Indus Valley for thousands of years. They have been cultivated since ancient times from Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt, possible as early as 4000 BCE. As for bread, most historians believe leavened bread originated in Egypt, probably around 300 BC.
