Sub? Hoagie? Hero? Grinder?

Wondering what to have for lunch? Today is the day to celebrate the "big" sandwich! This celebration is a bit different from National Sandwich Day which is coming up in Early November. We will wait until that day to visit the "king" of sandwiches, the Dagwood. For today, you get to choose from four specialty sandwiches. Are you hungry? If not now, you probably will be by the time you get to the end of this post.

October 9 is...

Submarine-Hoagy-Hero-Grinder Day

Oh, my! That does look good!

A sandwich is pretty much served any way YOU like to buy it or choose to build it. In other words, sandwiches are an individual thing. As for their names, origins vary with most being dependent upon where you live and the type of bread. Take for example the sandwiches up for grabs on this day's celebration.

Grinder: Mid-west, New England, Riverside, California

Hero: New York, Northern New Jersey

Sub: Delaware

Hoagie: Pennsylvania (esp. Philadelphia), South Jersey, Maryland (esp. Baltimore)

Of course, one does not have to live in either of these parts of the country to enjoy the sub, hoagie, hero or grinder. There are even other states which boast similar sandwiches with unique names of their own.
