Today's History Lesson

To understand today's history lesson is to first examine your own perception of a veteran. It is important to establish the mindset when you hear the word veteran. What is your first impression? What do you think lies behind one becoming a veteran...of course, militarily speaking? That stipulation must be interjected since a veteran, generally speaking, can be a person who has had long experience in a particular field. With your own personal thoughts and experiences firmly in place, read on.

Veteran is an all-encompassing word. 

It is feeling absolute pride, joy, exhilaration and emotional gratification for serving one's country. It means extreme sacrifice for both self and family. It means goosebumps every time the National Anthem is sung or the American flag is flown. It encompasses carrying the scars, mental and physical, sometimes never being able to let go but if asked would you do it over again, the answer would emphatically be YES! It is putting others before yourself never missing a moment to help when needed. It is having a deep love of country and everything she stands for - past, present and future. It is being privileged to maintain the safety and security of America. It is making grave sacrifices and putting your own life on the line if necessary. It is strength, honor and courage even in the direst of times. It is the epitome of patriotism. That is only a part of what it is to be called a veteran!
