War became the subject of film as soon as cameras could take moving pictures of combat. The "first" war film was probably a one-and-a-half minute pro-war film immediately following the United States declaration of war on Spain in 1898. From that point on, all the wars in American history have found a place in Hollywood's cinema. From silent films to galaxies beyond imagination stories have been written of family conflicts, racial conflicts and romances ultimately finding their way to the silver screen. Once sound entered the picture movie lines became cultural icons. One such movie is in today's history spotlight with the film only being the beginning of legendary sequels, television shows, games, apps, celebrations and communities of followers. From the original 1977 film came the catchphrase "May the force be with you!" This was misinterpreted in 2005 as "On May 4th, we are with you!" which led to the first organized celebration of Star Wars Day on May 4, 2011...May the Fourth be With You!

Did you know...
- George Lucas was so sure the film would flop that instead of attending the premiere, he went on holiday to Hawaii with his good friend Steven Spielberg, where they came up with the idea for Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).
- While George Lucas was filming on location in Tunisia, the Libyan government became worried about a massive military vehicle parked near the Libyan border. Consequently, the Tunisian government, receiving threats of military mobilization, politely asked Lucas to move his Jawa sandcrawler farther away from the border.
- Darth Vader has only 12 minutes of screen time.
- Harrison Ford deliberately didn't learn his lines for the intercom conversation in the cell block, so it would sound spontaneous.
- The skeleton that Threepio passes belongs to a Tatooine creature called a Greater Krayt Dragon. This artificial skeleton was left in the Tunisian desert after filming and still lies there. During filming of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002), the site was visited by the crew and the skeleton was still there.
