Historical, Funny & Weird

So many different things being celebrated on this one day! Yep! February 11 is loaded and here are eight, that's right, 8 celebrations to explore! While all will not be discussed at length, each will at least be somewhat mentioned. That way you have a choice which to celebrate and the how is totally up to you.

February 11 is loaded with the...

Historical, Funny & Weird
Let's begin with two that you can celebrate at the same time!
That's right two for one...yee haaaaa!

Get Out Your Guitar Day and
White Shirt Day!

My reasoning for justifying a 'twofer' is that not everyone owns a guitar. Anyone, however, could sketch a guitar on a white tee, then, grab the nearest broom! You think I am kidding but what the heck...you do want to celebrate, don't you?  If you own a guitar, this is NOT just another guitar day. Get that instrument out of the closet, from the attic, snatch it from the storage cabinet in the garage and start a jamboree. Surely at one time you wanted to be a star. Now is your chance to strut your stuff...on the guitar, of course!
This Day in History...

As for the white shirt, there is a bit of history behind this one. White Shirt Day marks the end of a union strike by employees of General Motors in 1937. On February 11, 1937, after 44-day contentious days, GM recognized the union and negotiated a first contract. Thus, February 11th commemorates their fight for fairer working conditions with the wearing of a white shirt.

It was winter 1937, and workers at the General Motors Fisher No. 1 plant were maligned after a summer of scorching heat where some men collapsed on the plant floor.

Management demanded production speed and efficiency, but low wages, unpaid vacations and no seniority rights were the norm.

The workers would not be denied justice and decided to stand up by sitting down for workers’ rights. Locked inside the plant by the company, production lines were shut down. They slept on car seat cushions, ate bean soup, and passed the time singing songs and playing cards. Read MORE...

Surely you are wondering what else is being celebrated so here ya' go...

Extraterrestrial Culture Day

Of course you can guess what triggered this one. It is actually an officially acknowledged day in New Mexico (Roswell). Extraterrestrial Culture day celebrates extraterrestrial cultures, and our past, present and future relationships with extraterrestrial visitors. Yep! All of the ETs out there watching us when we don't even know they are around!

Make a Friend Day and Make a Friend's Day

Another double! This celebration is a little different from Friendship Day in that it is a great opportunity to meet someone new or do something to make a new friend. Smile, be happy, the rest follows naturally. Make a Friend Day, is the perfect opportunity to begin a new friendship. Make a Friend's Day is a terrific opportunity to make someone else do the smiling. Make someone else happy today!

Don't Cry Over Spilled Milk Day

The quote at the right really nails the reason behind this day. Mistakes are made, it is human nature. No need in wasting time over something that cannot be undone. The best way to celebrate this day is to forgive yourself for past mistakes and look forward instead. You could also enjoy a milkshake or a milk pudding – but just don’t get stressed if some of it ends up on the floor!

Satisfied Staying Single Day

There are many people who jump for joy at being single. Doesn't have to mean he or she will be single the rest of his/her life but right now each is living with what's right here, right now. Satisfied Staying Single Day, or S3, is less about chasing a dream of happily-ever-after, and more about living life in the moment – a cause that even couples can embrace. Singles love to party so if you are single, why not celebrate being single as singles do so naturally.

National Inventors Day

On February 11, 1983, U.S. President Ronald Reagan declared this day to be National Inventors Day. The date was selected, as Thomas Alva Edison, the greatest inventor in U.S. history, was born on this day in 1847 in Milan,Ohio. While Edison was perhaps best known for inventing the light bulb, he held over 1,000 patents! National Inventors Day honors Thomas Edison and all inventors, recognizing the enormous impact inventions have on technology industry, and society worldwide. Just think about all the inventions, and  the resulting new products, processes and procedures that you have seen in your lifetime. It readily gives us an appreciation for the inventors, that allowed these things to come into being.

Last, but maybe not least if it fits your forte...

Pro Sports Wives Day

This national day of observance gives recognition to nearly half a million active and retired sports wives throughout the country for their public service in the estimated $213 billion professional sports industry. Unknown to the public, pro sports wives are the household managers, the silent partners who keep our favorite athletes motivated, focused and determined to win and create the feeling of being a winner within us all.

Pick one or two or three...
