Cherry Reigns Supreme


Summer is rapidly coming to a close but temperatures are still HOT! That being the case begs treats and snacks that are a bit on the cool side...icees, ice cream, ice cream sandwiches, cones, sodas, floats, banana splits and sundaes, frozen yogurt, creamsicles, etc. Of course, that is just the beginning of a really long list. Let's just stop there and move on to the celebration of the day.

Kids love Popsicles! So do adults because eating them brings out the child in each one. Two billion Popsicle ice pops are consumed every year. From amusement parks and zoos to the family freezer, cherry reigns supreme as kids' favorite flavor of popsicle so it is no wonder today's celebration is National Cherry Popsicle Day. While the creator of this special day is unknown, there is recorded history surrounding the inventor of the first Popsicle who just happened to be an 11-year-old boy.

A Bit of Popsicle History...
In 1905, eleven-year-old Frank Epperson from San Francisco, California invented the popular hot weather treat, the Popsicle as we know it today. However, the invention supposedly came about as a pure accident! According to the Popsicle company, one cold evening Frank left a mixture of powder flavored soda water with a stir stick in it on the porch. Popsicle Registered Trademark

It is rather interesting to note Popsicle is a trademarked name, not a generic term. Yet, whether bought in a grocery, convenience store or made at home, the icy concoction on a stick is almost always referred to as a 'popsicle' no matter what its brand may be.
