"The King" - NO! Not Elvis!

Today's History Lesson continues, in sports...

Move forward 148 years from the War of 1812 to the year 1960.

STOP! Dependent upon the era in which you grew up, you may or may not be familiar with the TV commercial whose opening line was "Don't touch that dial!" Well, similar instructions apply here. Don't touch the link below to this day in history! Test your knowledge first of the person in question and his game from a touch of trivia. Move ahead slowly, don't scroll to the bottom!

This Day in History: June 18, 1960
This is one of ?personal quotes.
The person: ? The event: ? The game: ?

Photo is Phil Mickelson. Nope! That's not the person but is a hint.
? receives his first set of golf clubs from his father at the age of three.

By now, you have surely guessed the game...GOLF!

? first broke 100 when he was seven years old.

 ? becomes a caddie at age 11.

When ? won his last major, the 1964 Masters,
? was golf's career money leader.
Four years earlier, ? had become
golf's first career millionaire.

Named PGA Player of the Year in 1960, and again in 1962,
Awarded "Athlete of the Decade" (1960s) by the Associated Press,
Won the Masters four times and the British Open twice

? used to fly his own twin-engine,
seven-seater plane to golf tournaments.
In 1973, ? became the first golfer to win
more than $100,000 in one year.

2002 Makes record 48th consecutive start at the Masters (his final Masters Tournament)
? was unsure of what to do, and when he left school, ? was tempted to turn pro right away. But that was not an easy decision to make. Though being a professional golfer enticed the young ?, professional golf promised no financial stability in the 1950s. In fact, ? popularity after his entrance into the world of professional golf, in 1954, brought about the higher winnings and larger purses players are familiar with today. Many professionals still call ? "The King" because they realize that were it not for ? decision to turn pro the game would never have taken off.

Another ?personal quote.
How did you do? Have you guessed the master of golf? "The King" - NO! Not Elvis!

? is the one and only...
