Turnover, Tart or Fried Pie?
This is exactly what I remember as a fried tart!
Being one of the true GRITS (Girls Raised in the South), it was not unusual when growing up to have fried tarts during any occasion, any time of the day. The best were the fresh apple or fresh pear (hard to choose between those two, really!) However, if life demanded I make a choice, it would be the pear simply because of the pear tree in the back yard! Doesn't get any fresher than that! When I discovered this day's celebration, it's name was not familiar until reading the article Empanada shells make great tarts! My mouth started watering as the memories flooded my brain! 'Delicioso'!
ifood.tv states celebration on May 8. Um-m-m-m? Typo?
This American celebration originated in northwest Spain and in the 21st century is enjoyed the world over. An Empanada is basically a single-fold, single-serving turnover being baked or fried, also referred to as a handheld fried pie. It boasts both the sweet and savory varieties hosting fruits, sugars and syrups or meats, cheeses, or oils. Originally being made with bread dough, today many are made with flaky pastries.
