Cracker? Cookie? Cookie-cracker!

Cookies are an all-time favorite snack or treat. Age rarely enters into the picture since the cookie is enjoyed from infant to senior citizen! Sometimes it is the taste. Sometimes, the crunch. Other times just simply the melt-in-the-mouth goodness. The same can be said for a very famous cracker that is made with a layered dough like crackers, yet, are sweet like cookies.

April 18...

A bit of animal history - cracker, that is...
The type of animal crackers that we know today date to 19th-century England. They were first imported; in the latter part of the century they were manufactured domestically. “Zoologicals” made by local baker Walter G. Wilson were sold at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Two New York companies, Herfield & Ducker (in Brooklyn) and Vandeveer & Holmes Biscuit Company in Manhattan, manufactured them year-round. Both companies were ultimately acquired by the New York Biscuit Company, which then became part of the National Biscuit Company (known today as Nabisco).  [Source: The Nibble]
  • Animal-shaped crackers were first brought to the United States during the late 1800’s.
  • Not until 1902 did the animal cracker's box début its "Barnum's Animals" circus theme.
  • The now-familiar box was designed for the Christmas season with the innovative idea of attaching a string to hang from the Christmas tree.
  • Since their beginning, there have been 37 different animals included in Barnum's Animal Crackers? Today more than 40 million packages of animal crackers are sold each year around the world.

If you are one who had rather bake your own batch of "animals", this is a great way to spend time in the kitchen with your kids, maybe even the neighborhood youngsters. Just be sure to have plenty of ice cold milk on hand for the dunking! Don't have 'animal' cookie cutters? No problem. They can be found anywhere from Walmart to Williams-Sonoma or individually online).
O-o-o-oh! Those tiny little critters are not just for dunking and eating! Of course, there should be a bowlful reserved for snacking... these are your energy bites that help keep the creative juices flowing while thinking of all the different ways you can use them. Um-m-m-m? What do I want to bake today...pie? Cheesecake? Pie? [Oops! Already said pie but animal cracker crust sounds so delightful!] Cupcakes? Wonder what I could do with ice cream?
