No! 'Bleu' is not misspelled nor is it for this occasion any indication of a sad, gloomy day! The different spelling is attributable to its French connection. The French form of the 'b-l-u-e' spelling has been used in names of various French bleu cheeses - a cheese containing a blue mold - marketed widely in Britain and the United States. Another reference is the name "Le Cordon Bleu" meaning The Blue Ribbon, which designates something or someone (often a chef) of the highest class or first-class distinction.
