This day in history, March 16, marks the beginning of one very prestigious military establishment and the end of a bloody segment of WWII. Today we salute our military of the present and honor the memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend America's freedom.

United States Military Academy

The United States Military Academy--the first military school in the United States--is founded by Congress on March 16, 1802 for the purpose of educating and training young men in the theory and practice of military science. Located at West Point, New York, the U.S. Military Academy is often simply known as West Point.

The academic program grants a bachelor of science degree with a curriculum that grades cadets' performance upon a broad academic program, military leadership performance, and mandatory participation in competitive athletics. Cadets are required to adhere to the Cadet Honor Code, which states that "a cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do." The academy bases a cadet's leadership experience as a development of all three pillars of performance: academics, physical, and military. [Source: wikipedia.org]

This Day in History: March 16, 1945

The WWII amphibious operations that began on February 19, 1945 ended today March 16, 1945.

With a U.S. Navy military government established, Iwo Jima was declared secured, the fighting over. More than 6,000 Marines died fighting for the island, along with almost all the 21,000 Japanese soldiers trying to defend it.
