OiNk! OinK! OINK!

Pork has been declared the other white meat...nutritious, as well as flavorful. Unless you are a vegetarian, more than likely the thoughts, especially sounds of bacon sizzzin' in a cast iron skillet immediately come to mind. If there is a food you do not particularly like, just wrap it in bacon! Works every time (well, most of the time anyway)!

March 1 is... OinKer Day!

Why do you suppose a day has been set aside to celebrate the PIG? Why? Because the Pig is a wholly underrated animal. In an effort to raise the Pig's status, this special day was created in 1972 in an attempt to elevate awareness of the intellectual prowess, adaptability and general tastiness of the humble Pig. Unless you are a vegetarian, more than likely thoughts of bacon, ham, pork tenderloin, pork chops, BBQ pork, Boston butt, Sweet 'n' Sour Pork, and many more already have your mouth watering!
The succulence of the pig may be true but just look at that face! Just so-o-o-o-o cute! There are many ways to celebrate our little piggies other than at dinner time. Ever heard of Wilbur? Piglet? Gub-Gub? What about Napoleon and Snowball? Transcendent Pig, Positive Pig or Pigoons? And, of course, there are Babe, Olivia the Pig and Miss Piggy Those last three you surely know. Right?

They all have their own stories familiar to children of all ages.
Wilbur shares his story of friendship with a barn spider named Charlotte. Piglet, who exemplifies "virtue of the small," is the closest friend of Winnie-the-Pooh. Gub-Gub is one of the first animals with whom Dr. Doolittle learned to talk. Oh! If animals could only talk...what tales of woe and wonder they would share! Napoleon, the antagonist, and Snowball, the inventive and clever pig, are both residents on Animal Farm. Translucent Pig is mystical, omnipresent and knows the meaning of life among the Young Wizards series. Positive Pig is one of many anthropomorphic animals from the 80s Pickles. Pigoons are the products of genetic engineering in Ornx and Crake. Babe, of course, went on to movie fame having transitioned from The Sheep-Pig into an orphaned piglet that won the hearts of moviegoers! Olivia the Pig is immortalized in unique picture books of the 2000s. And, last but by no means least, Miss Piggy is a Muppet character known for her breakout role in Jim Henson's The Muppet Show (1976).
What better way to celebrate Pig Day that reading a story with your child!  Read MORE about the Great Oinkers in Literature!

Celebrate Pig Day by tying pink ribbons to trees to symbolize curly pink tails, and then either give the poor piggies a break in recognition of their service or tuck some bacon into a nice 'sammie' – your choice as to whether you Put Pork on Your Fork today!

After watching the video, you just might change your mind about that eating that pork...for today anyway!

Either way enjoy Pig Day!
