♫Godmother of Punk♫

Nicknames are often applied by the media, sometimes being quite horrific. It is the media's way to use expression and identify the significance of someone, a specific situation or event. For musicians, their nicknames are earned with most having many accolades to their credit. Each genre of music boasts its Kings and Queens with soul even having a Godfather. But who is a Godmother?

Welcome into the Spotlight...

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

Joan Jett is known as the Godmother of Soul building her own kind of rock star. Jett always brought danger, defiance and fierceness to rock and roll. Along with the Blackhearts - Jamaican slang for loner - she has never been afraid to explore her own vulnerabilities or her darker sides, or to speak her mind.
Joan Jett established a brand of punkish hard rock & roll that would inspire millions of barroom singalongs and influence a generation of female rockers. Jett was one of the most surprising success stories of the 1980s. The latter-day leader of the all-female teenage hard-rock group the Runaways, Jett could barely get a U.S. deal for her first solo album at the beginning of 1981. But one year later her second solo LP, I Love Rock 'N' Roll, had a Number One single with its title track and went platinum. Jett couldn't maintain that level of mainstream pop success, but she's continued recording and touring to a significant fanbase well into the 21st Century. [Source: Rolling Stone]
