Oh, my! Pie! Pie! Pie!

Of all desserts possible, at the top of your list is probably PIE! What makes pie so truly amazing? The aroma (before and after baking). The sight (we eat with our eyes first!). The crust (golden brown appearing crunchy). The filling (delightful anticipation when covered in the crust). The sound of each bite (especially if nuts or candies are involved). The texture (ultra creamy or fruity chunky). BTW, Pie is not just for dessert any more...there's breakfast, lunch, dinner, sweet and savory Pie! Pie! Pie!

Do you love pie?
The pie has been around since 2000 BC and has survived over 4000 years. Early Egyptians invented pie. Greeks and Romans were also among the first to enjoy pastry shells filled with different kinds of meat and seafood. Fruit pies were first invented in Europe sometime during the 14th century. The first apple pie recipe was printed by Geoffrey Chaucer in 1381 England. The ingredients in the recipe included apples, spices, figs, raisins, pears, saffron and cofyn (a casing of pastry).
What can possibly be better for celebrating National Pie Day than indulging in a slice - or two - of warm, delicious apple pie? Top it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and yum! yum! After all, apple pie is one of the American Classics!


Of course, your pie indulgence does not have to be a sweet pie. When the Pilgrims made their voyage to the New World in the late 1600s, they arrived with English pie recipes for beef, lamb, duck, or pigeon. These are still a menu item in the 21st century along with the traditional chicken pot pie.

Whether you prefer the sweet pie for dessert - apple, peach, cherry, flaky pear, anyfruit, coconut, anyberry, pumpkin, sweet potato, chocolate cream, peanut butter, pecan, key lime, yogurt or creamcheese based - OR desire a meat or seafood pie for the main course, bake your favorite pie recipe in honor of National Pie Day
