Elegance in Simplicity

A visit to Washington, D.C. can be a massive undertaking when examining all there is to see and do in the capital of the United States of America...definitely not a one-day's venture. This is the place representative of defining moments in America's history where in some instances time seemed to stand still. Within the ornate architecture of numerous buildings and grounds lies one monument in particular that can be described as elegance in simplicity. 

On this day, December 6, 1884, the nation’s architectural tribute to its founding father, Revolutionary War hero and first president, George Washington, is completed. 

 THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT

Made of some 36,000 blocks of marble and granite, the 555-foot obelisk was the tallest structure in the world at the time of its completion in December 1884. A city law passed in 1910 restricted the height of new buildings to ensure that the monument will remain the tallest structure in Washington, D.C.--a fitting tribute to the man known as the "Father of His Country." Fifty American flags surround the base of the monument, one for each state of the United States of America. [Source: History.com]

The Washington Monument stands on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. almost due east of the Reflecting Pool and the Lincoln Memorial.

When viewing the monument, the effects of the simplicity of its design are nothing less than feelings of being awestruck. Then, to top that off is the view from the observation deck at 500 feet...truly exemplary of America, the Beautiful!
