Iconic Gateways

Two iconic gateways share a monumental day of celebration nearly 80 years apart. One occurred in the 19th century, the other in the 20th century. Their commonality focuses on a gateway: the Gateway to America and the Gateway Arch.

The first is an iconic gift: As a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States of America, the Statue of Liberty began as "Liberty Enlightening the World." Having been designed in France, the dismantled 151-ft statue arrived in the United States enclosed in more than 200 packing cases. Its copper sheets were reassembled, and the last rivet of the monument was fitted on this day, October 28, 1886, during a dedication presided over by President Grover Cleveland. As witness to the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty were numerous French and American dignitaries.

On this day in history almost 80 years later well into the 20th century, on October 28, 1965, the tallest man-made monument in the United States, actually the Western Hemisphere, was completed: the Gateway Arch, a spectacular 630-foot-high parabola of stainless steel marking the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial on the waterfront of St. Louis, Missouri. Construction began on February 29, 1964.
