Saturday Night!

This Day in History: October 11, 1975

Today is not only Universal Music Day but it is Saturday...the universal party day! Around the world, depending upon the time zone, of course, people are gearing up for Saturday night...the night to let loose, party down 'til the crack of dawn! But, on this day in 1975, the party was not along the city streets nor the setting inside a local bar. The scene: the family living room. The mode: television. The event...

A topical comedy sketch made its debut on NBC with an all-star line-up including Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman. “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!” became household words with the show going on to become the longest-running, highest-rated show on late-night television.
The show was originally known as NBC’s Saturday Night because there was another show on ABC called Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell. However, NBC eventually purchased the naming rights, and since 1977 the edgy comedy program has been called Saturday Night Live. Lorne Michaels served as the show’s producer from 1975 to 1980, followed by Jean Doumanian from 1980 to 1981. Dick Ebersol helmed the show from 1981 to 1985. Michaels returned to the program that year, and has remained executive producer ever since. Source: This Day in History

Saturday Night Live is renown for its parodies and impersonations. The show that pushes the limits on all accounts premiered its fortieth season during the 2014–15 television season on NBC.

There is nothing like excitement on a Saturday Night! Songs have been written about Saturday Night, films made for a Saturday Night, television series hosting Saturday Night at the Movies and so much more.
