~A Day of Celebration~

Patriot's Day, aka Patriots' Day, is a day of celebration primarily in the states of Maine and Massachusetts.  It commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord fought in 1775 near Boston. Today's celebration is not to be confused with Patriot Day in the United States, an annual observance on September 11 in remembrance of those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001.

A Bit of History...
Starting in 1764, Great Britain enacted a series of measures aimed at raising revenue from its 13 American colonies. Many of those measures, including the Sugar Act, Stamp Act and Townshend Acts, generated fierce resentment among the colonists, who protested against “taxation without representation.” Boston, the site of the 1770 Boston Massacre and the 1773 Boston Tea Party, was one of the main points of resistance. King George III of Britain ramped up the military presence there, and in June 1774 he shut down the city’s harbor until colonists paid for tea dumped overboard the previous year. Soon after, the British Parliament declared that Massachusetts was in open rebellion.

Patriot's Day, April 15, 2013, will be long remembered not only for its significance as a civic holiday, uniquely a New England holiday, but for the tragic terrorist bombings (Boston Marathon Bombing) that occurred in Boston, Massachusetts. Unfortunately, this is not the first of such horrific events to occur on this important day in history.

Two of those tragedies—the Virginia Tech massacre and the Waco assault—were on Monday, the Patriot's Day of those years.

America is strong but vulnerable. We must remain Forever Watchful!
