Remembering 9/11

The very things terrorists sought and seek to destroy even today are the heart of America: Hope, faith and courage remain resolute even in the face of the harshest adversity. Out of the ashes of 9/11 one remembers . . .

The Sights. The Sounds. The Smells.

Twin towers of steel and glass
Cast shadows along busy streets
A glimpse of azure skies
Building-to-building repeats

Sounds amid neon lights
Echo the noise of the city
Ever staying, never ending
Daily songs without pity

Smells of toil, body sweat
Aromas that tickle the nose
Odors that the worse describes
In the city anything goes

A place of fame and fortune
Yet homelessness exists
The best among the worst
Side-by-side in the midst

The sights. The sounds. The smells.
That's the story of life the city tells.

Explosive bursts of steel and glass
Rain down upon the busy streets
Azure skies fade to somber gray
As violent explosion repeats

Sounds amid neon lights
Echo screams within the city
News flashes of terrorists
Wielding death without pity

Smells of burned flesh and bone
Aromas watering the eyes and nose
Odors that nothing describes
Everyone in the city knows

Lives forever changed
Within skies void of the sun
Sorrows gradually abated
Trusted justice to be done

The sights. The sounds. The smells.
That's the story of tragedy the city tells.

No longer twin towers of steel and glass
Only ghostly shadows along busy streets
Giants of world renown and might
Voice memories of stately retreats

Within a clear view of azure skies
Footprints remain in plain sight
A monument to grief and memory
Reflective of inner light

Sounds of silence
Grace man-made waterfalls
Sacrifice and heroism
Resound within hallowed walls

The smell of carnage gone
With remembrances of the brave
Scars deep, memories vivid
Of loved ones resting in the grave

The sights. The sounds. The smells.
That's the story of courage the city tells.
