This Day in History

August 31, 1997

Wikipedia.org
Tragedy struck at the heartstrings of young and old as news of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales spread around the world. What a tragic end to such a gracious lady who will always be remembered for her charitable spirit.

Diana ~ The Princess of Hearts
Lady Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales, Great Britain
July 1, 1961 - August 31, 1997

The Smiles of Diana

An icon of British royalty, the “People’s Princess”
smiled from within capturing the heart of America.
She mesmerized the world with her interest in fashion
and popular culture but is most remembered for her
compassion, a trait upon which she thrived.

For a small, wee child
With rosy cheeks aglow
An uncertain smile
Seemed quite apropos

A delightful young girl
Of hardly ten
With a hint of a smile
Let you in…

Inside her heart
Where warmth resided
Soothing comfort
Her smile provided

A fairytale wedding
Showered joy and pride
Within a blissful smile
She both laughed and cried

Empathy and devotion
Surpassed all mystical charms
Within the most loving smile
New life wiggled in her arms

Arms that opened wide
Even in times of dire distress
With a smile so big
Stayed strong as a mighty fortress

Graceful beauty
Her true legend rendered
Smiles within smiles
Always to be remembered

Diana, your smiles are deeply missed!

    1. You know I do too. I was really taken back when I noticed the year was 1997. It just does not seem like it has been that long.

  2. Wow, time really does fly, doesn't it. I really do feel it was at most a couple of years ago. Beautiful tribute. Thank you for not forgetting

  3. She was a special lady, who will never be matched I'm afraid. My dad died 9 years ago on 31st as well.
    Where does time go...?

    1. Diana, was indeed very special. My dad died in 1997 but it was in July. Time goes all too quickly!

  4. I remember exactly where I was, and the sadness I felt, when I heard the tragic news about Princess Diana. She was the definition of the word, "grace." And what wonderful sons she brought into this world to live out her legacy. A wonderful tribute, Sharla.

    1. Thank you, Peggy. Yes, I aree...she is the epitome of 'grace' - graceful in beauty and in compassion. She will continue to be remembered for as long as time will permit.

  5. I remember that day so well and what a tragdy. I have a daughter-in-law that looks so much like her that we never forget. I can't believe her boys are grown men now--seems like yesterday.

    1. Then, your daughter-in-law is a natural beauty! She would be very proud of her sons:>)

  6. Losing Diana was such a tragedy. There will never be another like her, not in the royal family anyway. She was so out in the public eye doing such great things. It's sad she had such turmoil in her personal life.

I think she would be proud of her sons. It's hard to believe so much time has gone by already.

Vivian had a nice post about her on her blog yesterday.

    1. Yes, she would most definitely! I can still see her so vividly throughout her life, cut short much too quickly.

  8. Sharla, we both had the same idea!
I loved your pics and the words.
She was absolutely unique, wasn't she?

  9. Sharla, as much as I liked Diana, I am so happy that God chose Kate Middleton to be the woman that would stand behind William. A mother can only do that for so long, but a wife for a lifetime now. Diana raised William wonderfully, and Kate loves him dearly, it is evident in her smile, and his when they break protocol. I wish we had seen Diana be happy, but she will always be the remembered as a caring and authentic human being. Thank you for the memories.

    1. Ah-h-h, Deirdre. You have yet again responded most inspiringly. I have not followed William and Kate to much extent but I know Diana is smiling her approval in spirit.
